An evening in 3 parts, with tapas and drinks, 2hr
4 singers, 1 pianist, 1 guitarist
Romancero, a program in three parts, presents evocative, infrequently-performed music inspired by Spain’s people and poetry. The Italian composer Castelnuovo-Tedesco’s Romancero Gitano for vocal quartet and guitar, a setting of texts of Federico Garcia Lorca, was inspired by gypsy rhythms and dances; the music is atmospheric and explosive in equal measure. Schumann’s Spanisches Liederspiel, Op. 74, is a gorgeous cycle of alternating quartets, duos, and solos on texts that were translated into German from original Spanish sources, and each piece is captivating and passionate. Finally, Damask is thrilled to present a newly-commissioned work for quartet, guitar, and piano by young Spanish composer Federico Mosquera, a dramatic piece tailored to the beauty and individualism of Damask’s sound.
