New Love

Brahms’s Liebeslieder Walzer are the most beloved songs for vocal quartet and featured at one of Damask’s earliest concerts. New Love combines these familiar works with other love-songs for the same combination of vocal quartet and four-hand piano, including modern works inspired by the older standards.

Tief im Herzen trag' ich Pein

O wie lieblich ist das Mädchen

Johannes BRAHMS: Liebeslieder Walzer, Op. 52

Rede, Mädchen, allzu liebes. Im Ländler-Tempo

Am Gesteine rauscht die Flut

O die Frauen

Wie des Abends schöne Röthe

Die grüne Hopfenranke

Ein kleiner, hübscher Vogel nahm. Grazioso

Wohl schön bewandt

Wenn so lind dein Augen mir

Am Donaustrande

O wie sanft die Quelle

Nein, es ist nicht auszukommen

Schlosser auf, und mache Schlösser

Vögelein durchrauscht die Luft

Sieh, wie ist die Welle klar

Nachtigall, sie singt so schön

Ein dunkeler Schacht ist Liebe

Nicht wandle, mein Licht

Es bebet das Gesträuche

Oerknal!Damask: Sin and Expiation

Including: Premiere - Lewis Nielson's 'Cilice'

Ticket Reservations:  http://www.korzo.nl/nl/producties/sin-and-expiation

Oerknal and vocal quartet Damask present a concert inspired by Bach’s Matthaüs-Passion. Themes of loss, sin, betrayal, sacrifice and redemption weave through various textures, tapestries and compositional voices, reinventing the traditional passion experience.

Since its inception Oerknal has cultivated a substantive collaborative relationship with American composer and conductor Lewis Nielson. This concert presents the premiere of Nielson’s Cilice, a co-commission from Oerknal and Damask. Cilice is a 21st-century cantata setting texts from Psalms, Dante, Baudelaire, Rimbaud, Hölderlin, Goethe, Brecht, and Bachmann exploring themes of sin and expiation. In something of a Nielson trademark, the instrumentalists are called on to sing and the singers to create instrument-like sounds with the formal intention of developing a unification of ensemble and image as the work proceeds. In addition to this premiere, Damask offers Prophetiae Sibyllarum, a stunning collection of motets by Renaissance composer Orlande de Lassus, as well as Kaija Saariaho’s beautiful duet From the Grammar of Dreams, based on texts by Sylvia Plath exploring themes of self-doubt and absolution.

Oerknal offers Effluénces, an ethereal quintet by Greek composers Dimitri Papageorgiou, and both groups join forces to perform an arrangement of Medieval composer Hildegard van Bingen’s mystical masterpiece Symphonia armonie celestium revelationum.

COME, DAUGHTER

David Lang’s Little Match Girl Passion for four singers (each also playing percussion) is a striking dramatization of Hans Christian Andersen’s tale of the same name, told within the structural framework of a Bach Passion. Damask Ensemble pairs this masterwork with other music on the subject of release from oppression, including Milhaud’s Six sonnets composés au secret (settings of texts by French Resistance writer Jean Cassou) and adaptations of American slave spirituals by Moses Hogan.

Damask Ensemble and Oerknal! New Music Collective present a program marrying some of the earliest written music--polyphony of Perotin, which incorporated sacred texts into secular melodies--with 20th century masterpieces inspired by the older repertoire’s spare and uncompromising beauty, including works of Messiaen, Boulez, Stravinsky, Debussy, Takemitsu, and a newly commissioned work by Reiko Füting.
